Chapter 9
Lucille
Lucille watched the old manâs truck pull out of the parking lot from the rearview mirror. Raquelâs courage was unusual. It was obvious she was out of her element, but she didnât run off screaming. That was a plus.
There were humans in Lilith Springs, but most had a lifetime of experience with the supernatural world. A handful were witches, but witches did not settle well here. Both shifters and vampires had a major distrust of witches.
âWhat is she?â Shaw got in the car.
She followed his gaze and saw he had been watching her too.
He continued. âShe smells like a shifter, a demon, and a vampire, but she appears one hundred percent human.â
Lucille was not in the mood for chit-chat, especially with Shaw. He wasnât the worst vampire, but alone time sounded wonderful.
âDid you need a ride or something?â
âNot really. I just wanted to catch up and see what you knew about the new bar owner.â
âNo one knows much. Why are you interested?â
âAs the mayor of Lilith Springs, I need to know whoâs moving in and what theyâre doing.â
Lucille started the car. âDid Brad say anything to you about leaving his place to someone outside the family?â
âNo. Itâs been a year, but I remember he was alive on a Monday. We had coffee. He was dead by Wednesday. Weâre not sure how he died.â
âNo? I didnât know that. Did someone find him?â
âOne of Letaâs boys found him. I came by to drop off an order and found Brad on the deck at a table.â
âWhich one?â
âWhich table?â
Lucille clicked her tongue, raised an eyebrow, and pressed her lips together.
Shaw snickered. âCalm down, First One. Atticus, the oldest, found him.â
Lucille started the car and pulled out of the lot. She wasnât fond of the name First One, but it was part of her title. Lucille of the Void, First One of The Day.
Humans thought God was the creator of all that lived on Earth. But it was the Creators, Adam, Eve, and Lilith, who birthed the living into this realm. The three lived a happy life, and there was no strife until Eve allowed herself to be lured away by evil. She grew jealous of Lilith and convinced Adam to cast her into the Void.
But Eve had taken some of the forbidden fruit and found it too delectable to resist. She convinced Adam to try the fruit, and soon the addiction was too much. Small holes appeared in the Void, allowing evil to escape. This infuriated Lucille. Despite her pain of rejection, she wanted to help Adam and Eve because she still loved them. She stepped in and took control of the evil, forcing it back into the Void. Adam and Eve continued eating the forbidden fruit, and the evil became too much for Lilith. It splintered and grew. Eveâs dalliance with sin Was their downfall. And if they didnât care for themselves, Lilith wouldnât care about them either. She opened the trap and released all the evil, but one evil soul remained.
Lucilleâs father.
